CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Are you going to be all right alone here with Royce?” Lina asked, hoisting her large burgundy purse over her shoulder. She’d changed into a light cream-colored silk button down shirt, though this time she’d included a cardigan that accentuated her bag. “I’ll be back as soon as the press conference is over. You two should try to be civil to one another while I’m gone.”

“We’ll be fine. It’s you who needs to be careful,” Cailyn cautioned, not pleased with this new turn of events. Her life was spiraling out of control and things kept happening to speed up the process. It was at times like this that something serious happened in all the horror films she’d ever seen. “I think you should spend the night again, if you can.”

“And I’m thinking I need to check on my apartment. I’ve been gone too long,” Lina countered, glancing over her shoulder toward Cailyn’s office. Royce had excused himself to take a phone call, most likely getting an update on the mayor’s press conference. “The two of you seem a little friendlier than yesterday. Try not to get caught up in the past and ruin all your forward progress.”

“We’ve come to an understanding,” Cailyn corrected vaguely, not wanting to talk about her fragile relationship with Royce. The fact that they had reconciled old grievances didn’t mean what Lina was suggesting. “Back to you…just be careful.”

“Aren’t I always?” Lina quipped, wiggling her fingers as she headed for the door. “Don’t forget to lock up behind me.”

Cailyn looked back down at the numerous criminal reports splayed out over the coffee table, wondering what clue she was missing that would have put her life in danger. She hadn’t made it a secret that she was doing a human-interest piece on Pamela Phinneas, but why would her article cause someone to try and kill her? It hadn’t made sense before, but it certainly did now in light of the mayor’s recently discovered connection to the Phinneas family.

“Is it as simple as that?” Cailyn whispered to herself, wondering if the mayor had simply not wanted his biological relationship to be made public. After all, elections were a year away and this would definitely come into play with the conservative majority. She sighed as she stood, pleased when her usual soreness didn’t materialize. She made her way to the door and was about to flip the deadbolt when she saw her parents coming up the walk in the camera feed on the security panel. Making any sense of the mayor’s involvement would have to wait an hour as she opened the door. “How are you two this morning?”

“We brought you an early lunch from the diner downtown,” her father said gruffly, looking her over with a concerned eye. Mario Geneva was a typical father worried about his daughter and Cailyn did her best to keep that in mind. “You’re too damned thin.”

“I’m fine, Dad,” Cailyn replied in her usual manner, lifting her face to receive his kiss on her cheek.
